Canberra City

Canberra City is considered the most bustling and busiest part of the city, right in the heart of the Australian Capital Territory.

The official name of the suburb where it’s located is City, though locals also refer to the area as the Civic, Civic Centre, or City Centre.

One of the more pleasurable things to do in Canberra City is to take leisurely walks along Northbourne Avenue, where some of the oldest buildings in the city are located.

The avenue is also where the oldest bar and night club in the city are located, along with other similar establishments that make nightlife in the City vibrant and bustling.

Leisurely walks and sightseeing can also be enjoyed at Garema Place and the City Walk, both paved pedestrian areas where several shops and restaurants also cluster.

Additionally, the City Walk also features numerous street performers that entertain passer-bys.

Outdoor cafes also line the street, inviting weary travelers to rest and enjoy cups of coffee.

The area is where the Canberra Multicultural Festival is held, an event that draws large crowds of spectators and participants from all over the city and beyond.

Shopping is another prevalent activity enjoyed in Canberra City , where the Canberra Centre is located.

This shopping mall has numerous shops, restaurants, cafes, and other commercial establishments that are frequented by residents and visitors.

Entertainment is also derived from regular performances at the Canberra Theatre, where dance and theatrical productions are hosted.

Another culturally-significant destination in the CBD area would be the Canberra Museum and Gallery, where its art exhibits are open to the public for free.

Canberra City faces the Lake Burley Griffin, a man-made body of water named after the architect who designed the whole city.

The lake provides a ready destination for those who wish to go sailing, rowing, or simply taking their loved ones on a picnic by the shore.

The recreational use of the lake is more apparent during the warmer months of spring and summer.

Right in the center of the Civic is the City Hill park, a popular landmark surrounded by a busy thoroughfare.

However, most of the residents and visitors in the area prefer to frequent the Commonwealth Park, located right on the north shore of the Lake Burley Griffin, for outdoor recreation.

The park is also where the Floriade festival is held annually, when the whole city celebrates the coming of Spring with festivities and merriment.

It is also a preferred site for walking and biking, as well as for outdoor concerts.

The park also has water features and sculptures to delight passers by.

Across the park and on the southern shore of the lake is the Capital Hill, where the Parliament House and other government buildings are located.

Children will also enjoy a visit in Canberra City.

The St.

Kilda Carousel which was originally opened in 1914 is located on Petrie Plaza features a carousel or merry-go-round.

At night, the lights look amazing and provide a very festive mood.

Tourists are also offered a chance to enjoy the night lights of Canberra City from the Telstra Tower which extends to two hundred metres high.

It is not located on central business district but offers a good view of it especially at night.

Although the tower was built for telecommunication purposes, it has become a famous landmark and houses a revolving restaurant where tourists can get a good view of Canberra City.

A visit to Canberra City will not be complete without a visit to the Cockington Green.

It is located on the northern part of the central business district and boasts of several miniature houses and buildings.

These miniatures are not just ordinary ones but famous buildings from all over the world.

Every type of architecture is in display, be it English cottages, East European castles or even South American Aztec Temples.

The miniatures are surrounded by well-maintained lawns and gardens so visiting will be a tranquil and relaxing experience as well.

A stream that laces through the miniature also provides a tranquil and unique sound.
